NAFDAC Unleashes High-Tech Crackdown on Fake Drugs in Nigeria

In a groundbreaking move to safeguard public health, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has rolled out an advanced traceability technology aimed at eradicating fake and substandard drugs from Nigeria’s pharmaceutical market. The initiative, launched in Northwest Nigeria, is set to revolutionize drug regulation and restore public confidence in the safety of medical products.

At the heart of this transformation is a cutting-edge traceability system that tracks pharmaceuticals from manufacturing to distribution, ensuring that only genuine products reach consumers. By tightening control over the drug supply chain, NAFDAC aims to eliminate the infiltration of falsified medicines that have long plagued the country.

One of the most powerful tools introduced in this fight is the GreenBook, a digital verification platform that allows both consumers and regulatory authorities to authenticate pharmaceutical products instantly. This game-changing technology empowers Nigerians to verify the legitimacy of medicines with just a few clicks, closing loopholes that counterfeiters have exploited for years.

Alongside the traceability system, NAFDAC has unveiled the Paediatric Regulation 2024, a policy designed to enhance the quality and safety of medicines intended for children. With a specific focus on paediatric drug formulations, this regulation ensures that young patients receive the safest and most effective treatments available.

NAFDAC Director-General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to tackling the menace of counterfeit drugs. She emphasized that the five-year traceability implementation plan, aligned with the Nigeria Pharmaceutical Traceability Strategy, will enhance supply chain transparency and reinforce regulatory measures against substandard products.

By harnessing digital technology and stricter oversight, NAFDAC is not only cracking down on fake drugs but also fortifying Nigeria’s pharmaceutical sector. With these bold steps, the agency is setting a new standard for drug safety, proving that the fight against counterfeit medicine is one that can be won.
