Nigeria Partners with DP World to Revolutionize Port Infrastructure

Nigeria is setting its sights on a maritime transformation as the Federal Government explores a strategic partnership with DP World, the global port operator behind the renowned Port of Dubai. This collaboration signals a new era of efficiency, modernization, and investment in the country’s port sector, aimed at positioning Nigeria as a leading force in global trade.

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to port infrastructure development during a meeting with a delegation from DP World. Expressing optimism about the partnership, he assured the visiting team of Nigeria’s readiness to welcome investments that would enhance port management and drive large-scale improvements.

One of the key proposals under discussion is the establishment of an industrial park that would function as a logistics hub for export processing. Oyetola emphasized that Nigeria’s expansive coastline and abundant land resources make it a prime location for such a venture, which could significantly boost trade and economic growth. He encouraged DP World to submit a formal proposal to the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to kickstart the process.

With a clear vision for port modernization, the minister highlighted ongoing government efforts to increase private sector participation in port operations. He underscored the high return on investments within the sector and outlined plans to deepen draught levels to 16–16.5 meters, a move that would restore Nigeria’s position as a transshipment hub and attract larger vessels.

Digitalization is also at the heart of Nigeria’s port reform strategy. Oyetola detailed initiatives such as the Cargo Tracking System, the Port Community System, and the National Single Window Initiative, all designed to streamline operations, minimize human interference, and improve turnaround times. These measures are expected to enhance efficiency, curb delays, and make Nigerian ports more competitive on the global stage.

Speaking on behalf of DP World, delegation leader Sultan Ahmed Bin-Sulayem expressed enthusiasm about the company’s potential role in transforming Nigeria’s maritime industry. With operations spanning 48 countries and over 90 terminals worldwide, DP World brings a wealth of expertise and cutting-edge technology that could revolutionize port operations in Nigeria. Bin-Sulayem reaffirmed DP World’s commitment to implementing global best practices and leveraging innovative solutions to optimize efficiency and drive economic growth.

As Nigeria pushes forward with its ambitious plans for port modernization, the partnership with DP World could mark a turning point in the country’s maritime sector. By embracing technological advancements, deepening infrastructure, and fostering investment, the government aims to position Nigeria as a key player in international trade, unlocking new economic opportunities for the nation.
