NBRDA Advocates for Collaboration to Boost Biotechnology in Nigeria

The National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) has called on stakeholders in the biotechnology industry to collaborate and share knowledge to advance the field in Nigeria and across Africa.

This appeal was made during the closing ceremony of the International Conference on Biotechnology 2024 (ICoB24), which brought together leading scientists, researchers, policymakers, industry experts, and entrepreneurs from around the world. The conference aimed to explore biotechnology’s transformative potential in driving Nigeria’s economic growth.

In his closing remarks, NBRDA Director-General Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha encouraged participants to remain dedicated to utilizing biotechnology as a positive force. He highlighted the importance of ensuring that the knowledge shared and connections made during the conference continue to yield long-term benefits.

“I would like to express my profound appreciation to all the distinguished speakers, scientists, scholars, policymakers, industry leaders, and delegates who have contributed their expertise, insights, and passion to make ICoB24 a resounding success. Your active participation and commitment to advancing the frontiers of biotechnology and driving sustainable economic growth through innovation are commendable,” said Prof. Mustapha. He urged everyone to embody the spirit of innovation, collaboration, and excellence, ensuring that the insights shared reach a broader audience and translate into tangible advancements in the biotechnology sector.

Prof. Mustapha also thanked the conference partners and sponsors, including Agro-climatic Resilience in Semi Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL), the World Bank Assisted Project, Bauchi State Government, African Seed Trade Association (AFSTA), African Agricultural Foundation (AATF), PBS, OFAB Africa, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Sheda Science and Technology Complex (SHETSCO), and Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC). He acknowledged their generous contributions and unwavering support, which were instrumental in making the conference a reality.

Dr. Rose Gidado, Director of the Agricultural Biotechnology Department of NBRDA and chairman of the local organizing committee (LOC) for the conference, emphasized that the knowledge networks forged during the event would pave the way for a future where biotechnology improves lives and sustains the planet. She expressed her heartfelt gratitude to all participants and stakeholders for their roles in making the event successful.

“As we come to the close of this remarkable conference, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for making this event a resounding success. To our keynote speaker, panelists, and presenters, your insights and expertise have inspired us and broadened our understanding of biotechnology’s vast potential,” said Dr. Gidado. She also thanked the sponsors and partners for their invaluable support and the organizers and volunteers for ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience for all attendees.

Held from July 15-19, 2024, at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Centre & Suites in Abuja, the week-long conference featured prominent attendees, including President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, and representatives from the international community.

ICoB24, the maiden biotechnology conference in Nigeria, aimed to revolutionize the country’s economic sector and serve as a catalyst for advancements across the African continent. The success of this inaugural event sets a promising foundation for future initiatives in biotechnology, fostering innovation and collaboration for sustainable development.
